Keeping God in the Middle of Your Life
Numbers 2 tells us the very specific way that God commanded the Israelites to camp according to their tribes. It also tells the order in which they were to break camp and travel according to their tribes. In each case the tribe of Levi and the tabernacle of meeting were kept in the middle of everything. (Numbers 2:17) This was God's way of helping the Israelites keep Him in the middle of their lives. We need to do things today to ensure that happens for us, too.
When the Israelites camped, they were at home in their tents. However, whenever they went out of their tents, they could plainly see the cloud or the pillar of fire above the tabernacle, which represented the glory of God in their midst. Therefore, it was very difficult to forget God while they were at home. I believe we need to furnish our houses with pictures and plaques that remind us of God and His Word. We need to have Bibles in prominent places, so that we do not have to search for them. These things will help us keep God in the middle of our home life.
When the Israelites were traveling, they were working to follow the Lord. The tabernacle stayed in the middle of the multitude as they walked. They were constantly reminded of God's presence to guide them and protect them. We need to do things to keep God in the middle of our lives as we work. We decorate our office or desk with items that remind us of God, and for those who do not work in an office, there are many apps for smart phones that will give a verse for the day or a devotional, so that we can stop at lunch and breaks to seek the Lord.
Whatever we do, and wherever we go, life is always better when God is in the middle of our lives.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Numbers 3-6.
