Presumptuous Sins

David asked the Lord to keep him back from presumptuous sins, and not to let them have dominion over him. He knew that was the key to being blameless and staying away from great transgression.(Psalm 19:13) This is a vital truth for all believers.

When we know the Lord, it is easy to presume upon His grace by thinking we can get away with a little sin, and He will not punish us for it. After all, we love Him, and we serve Him, so surely, He will not get mad at us, if we just do one "little" sin. The word translated presumptuous also means arrogant. Therefore, we can get spiritual pride and think we are better than other people, so we can sin without God's punishment. Either way, it leads to one sin, then another, then another, until we are hard hearted, and we commit a great transgression.

That is what happened with David when he sinned with Bathsheba. He stayed home, when he should have been with his men fighting. Perhaps, he presumed God would forgive him just this once. Then, when he saw his friend's wife bathing on her roof, perhaps, he thought that since he was the king and an important person, he could have her, and God would overlook his sin of adultery this once. Then, when he tried to cover up his presumptuous sins, it led to him committing murder of a totally innocent man, who was completely loyal to him. Now, that is a great transgression, but it all started by staying home, when he should not have. See how this works. It is the same for all of us, so we need to stay away from presumptuous sins at all costs.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 20-22.
