Jacob's Vow
God gave Jacob a dream of a ladder leading to heaven with angels going up and down. He promised to take care of Jacob and bring him home in peace. Since Jacob was afraid Esau would kill him for his deception, that was good news. Therefore, Jacob made a vow to God that is significant.(Genesis 28:20-22) Let's look at what he vowed to God.
Jacob promised God that if He did what He said He would do, He would be His God. In other words, Jacob would trust Him and worship Him alone in His life. To show that, he set up the rock he slept on as a pillar, or a reminder of the dream at that place. Then, he promised to give God 10% or a tithe of all God gave him. This was to be an act of worship to God for taking care of him on his journey to find a wife from his father's family. Jacob was not commanded to tithe, because the Law was not given at that time. He voluntarily vowed to tithe as an act of worship.
We should make the same vow or commitment to God. If we are His child, and we know Christ as our Lord and Savior, God promises to care for us and provide for us. What better way to show our faith and our worship than to give the tithe? It shows that we know God is giving us all we have. It shows we believe He will provide what we need. It gives Him the credit and thanks for what we have, and it honors God. If we will do that cheerfully, as an act of worship, God will bless us like He blessed Jacob and so many people since then.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Genesis 30-33.
