Afflictions Can Be Good
Any time we face an affliction, we have a choice. We can choose to turn to the Lord and His Word for comfort, strength, and guidance, or we can try to handle it ourselves with human resources. If we turn to the Lord, it is very good for us, because the affliction helps us learn His statutes.(Psalm 119:71) If we turn away, the results can be devastating to us and to others. Think about it with me.
There are some things that we can only learn through pain and afflictions. Otherwise, we will not listen closely enough to the Lord and search His Word thoroughly enough to truly see Him and His statutes clearly. Each affliction that we turn to the Lord, we come to know His character more intimately, since we see His wisdom and power to meet that particular need. When we apply His Word to our situation because of the affliction, we are showing that we trust Him fully, and God always blesses our faith. That is why the psalmist said it was good to be afflicted.
Your life has either been a series of afflictions that have driven you closer to the Lord or farther away. In each one God is showing His love by wanting to reveal Himself more to you, so you can know Him better. Please, don't see afflictions as an enemy, but as a friend who brings you closer to your best Friend.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalm 119:89-176.
