Hungry For His Words

Job was confident in his relationship with God. He was not sure why the suffering had come, so he wanted to stand before the Lord and ask Him what was going on. His confidence was grounded in the fact that he "had not departed from the commandment of His lips." Also, Job could affirm,"I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food."(Job 23:12) Job was hungry for the words of God, and he obeyed them fully. We would all do well to do the same.

Job's affirmation is even more impressive when we consider he did not have a Bible. He lived before Moses wrote the first five books of the Old Testament. Notice how Job says "the commandment of His lips." He heard the words of God from His lips to Job's spiritual ears. He treasured the "words of His mouth." This shows how close the fellowship was between Job and the Lord. He listened for anything God said to Him, and He obeyed.

Now, we have the whole counsel of God in His Word, the Bible. However, we also need to sit quietly before the Lord after we have read His Word and as we pray, so we can hear His words and obey. He is still speaking, but are we taking time to listen? Part of it will depend on if we are hungry for His words. Let's tune our hearts to treasure His words more than our food, and I believe He will speak to us clearly.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Job 25-27.
