Clean and Free

Leprosy was a terrible death sentence in Old Testament times. There was no human cure. It was a long painful death. It brought separation from friends and family. I am sure that it was even worse than finding out you have cancer today.

On the rare occasion that a leper was cleansed he or she had to go the priest for verification and a cleansing ceremony. Once the priest saw that the leper was healed, he killed one bird, and he put the blood from that bird on another bird which was set free. The first bird was killed over running water and a branch of hyssop was used to sprinkle the blood on the live bird. Then, the living bird was set free in a field.(Leviticus 14:6,7) It must have been an incredible feeling of cleansing and freedom for the one who was being pronounced clean. At that point he received his life back.

Leprosy can be seen as a picture of sin. Sin leads to death. It is a long painful death, and there is no human cure. However, the blood of Christ can cleanse our sins and set us free from the separation from God. He can give us real, abundant life. I pray that you are clean and free from the effects of sin through knowing Jesus Christ as Lord of your life.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Leviticus 15-17.
