What Are The Odds?
The last time Jesus ate with His disciples was the Passover meal. Then, the next day Jesus was crucified. What are the odds that a human being could cause that to happen? I believe it was impossible for that to have been engineered by any human. It was the work of God, Himself.
Jesus told His disciples to go prepare for the Passover in the large upper room, and He told them just where to find that room. Then, He took the role of a servant and washed their feet in addition to the Passover meal. He was showing His humility to be willing to die for our sins, when He had never sinned. Then, at the end of the Passover meal He took the bread that represented the Coming Messiah to the Jews, and He told His disciples that the bread was His body, which was broken for them. He was that Messiah who had come. His blood was what would start a New Covenant. What a revelation to His closest friends that night.
However, it was even more amazing when we think of the Passover. The blood of the lamb put on the door posts had caused the death angel to pass over the Jewish homes. It had saved them from death. Then, they were set free from their bondage in Egypt. They had a dramatic experience of deliverance by God's power at the Red Sea, too. Why did God work it out for Jesus' last meal with the disciples to be the Passover? Jesus was the Ultimate Lamb, whose blood would save from death. He was the Lamb of God. He had come to give His body to be broken and His blood to be spilled for the payment for sin, so that God could righteously forgive a person and deliver them from Hell. The salvation Jesus brought was a dramatic experience of deliverance from the bondage of sin for all who believe in Him as Savior and Lord.
This was the perfect way to end Jesus' time with His disciples before His death, because it explained the Cross so well. We need to look back on it in that way, too. We need to realize it was no coincidence that the Last Supper was the Passover. It was one of God's witnesses to the reality of Jesus being the Messiah. We need to accept His witness and confess Jesus as Lord and Savior, if we have not done that yet. We need to see how it is all tied together for the good of the whole world coming to know Jesus.
Tomorrow, I intend to read I Samuel 15-16 and Luke 10:25-42.
