What is Church All About?

I wonder if we have allowed church to become something that the Lord never intended for it to be. Have we remade it in the America way? It seems that America loves entertainment and personal satisfaction. We love to have our needs met by some product or medicine. Our lives are filled with stuff we have bought because we think it will make our lives better. However, I don't think we have made any real improvements, except that we do have a lot of entertainment and comfort. There is still something missing, though.

Folks look at the church in the same way. They want to be entertained, and they want to have their personal needs met. Therefore, they shop around to find a church that meets the needs of themselves or their children. Then, what have they accomplished? They have been religious consumers, and they have found a superior product. However, is that what church is about?

The Bible seems to say that the church is a group of believers in an area who bind together to learn and grow, so they can reach the people around them for Christ. They worship, they fellowship, and they learn doctrine, but it is not so much for themselves as for the people who need the Lord. Yes, along the way their fellowship with believers is a comfort, and it meets some needs, but their needs should be met primarily through their own relationship with Christ and the Holy Spirit. What else or Who else can really meet our needs?

I think if we could get back to the church being about salvation of souls, instead of personal satisfaction, we would all be more satisfied. After all, the most satisfying thing in life besides coming to know Christ, is to help someone else come to know Him. Could that be why we have so little satisfaction? I think it is worth praying about.

Tomorrow, I intend to read II Chronicles 1-3 and John 10:1-23.
