The First Day of Kindergarten
Today was another one of those milestones of life. Kade went to Kindergarten, Yochien in Japanese. He is only 3 years old, but that is the age to begin in Japan. Lori called and gave us a full account of the first day, since she and Jeff accompanied him for the first day. She was also able to tell us how he did when they dropped him off for the second day, too, because of the time difference between Georgia and Japan. He did very well on both accounts.
The reason I mention it is that it doesn't seem like it was that long ago that we dropped his mom off at Midway Elementary school for her first day of Kindergarten at age 5. It was a very emotional moment for Chris and I, but Lori made it just fine. The same was true for Dixie and John when the time came for their first days, too. It seems to me to be a remarkable life truth for all of us. We work hard as parents to prepare our children to be on their own, and then, when the time comes we are very afraid that we haven't done a good job. We are afraid that they won't be able to operate without us. However, we often find that they are just fine. That is a good thing. In fact, it is one of the great blessings of life. Should we doubt that it is going to be that way? After all, we made it on our first day, didn't we? Actually, I skipped kindergarten, but I made it on my first day of first grade. It is a lesson in God's grace and His plan. He causes the child to grow in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man just like Jesus. (Luke 2:52) He watches over children especially, because He loves them so much. The Christian parent draws his or her strength and wisdom from the Lord, and even though no one is a perfect parent, God adds His grace to our obedient efforts, and our children are OK on their first days, not just their first days of kindergarten. Thank you Lord for Your grace.
Tomorrow, I intend to read I Samuel 15-16 and Luke 10:25-42.
