Washing Feet
This morning the men had a thoughtful study on washing feet from John 13. I feel like we dissected the passage very well, as we tried to understand why Jesus washed the disciples feet and whether He still wants us to wash feet today. What do you think?
Regardless of what we conclude about the practice of foot washing, the meaning is clear. Jesus wants us to be willing to do the most menial task to serve those around us, especially those to whom we are close. Therefore, I would ask you when was the last time you symbolically washed someone's feet by doing a lowly job to serve them? Was it your spouse? If not, why wasn't it? Would you wash someone else's feet before you would wash their feet? That isn't right, is it? The reality is that if we are going to obey Christ and be like Him, we must wash feet by serving others all of the time. That is what Jesus did. That is His nature.
We learned the real clincher this morning, too. Happiness results when we serve others, not when we are served. That is backwards from the world, but it is the truth for believers. You will not be truly happy until you emulate Christ, but when you serve others, real happiness will be the by-product of your service.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Leviticus 13 and Matthew 26:26-50.
