Obeying God's Word - Jeremiah 34-36 and Hebrews 2

People have a problem with obeying God's Word. They want to ignore it. They want to argue with it. They want to find problems with it, so that they do not have to obey it. However, at the same time people will obey the word of another person without any problem. They will take the word of a doctor, a lawyer, a scientist, or a professor. How does that make sense? It shows a spiritual problem. People do not want to submit to God's authority. They want to decide on their own what they will obey, and what they won't obey. That is not how it works. God's Word is the authority, and when we fail to obey it, there are serious consequences.

In Jeremiah's time, the people did not obey what God's Word said about releasing slaves every 7 years, because they were selfish. God judged them for their selfishness. Jeremiah pointed out how the Rechabites had obeyed their ancestor, Jonadab, but the children of Israel would not obey God. Then, when the king heard the Word of God from the scroll which the Lord instructed Jeremiah to write, he burned it in the fire. All of these things show the difficulty people have with obeying God's Word. It is a fatal mistake.

Hebrews makes it very plain that we will be very sorry if we neglect the great salvation of the Lord. However, many people hear God's Word of salvation, and they think of every reason to reject it. They make fun of Jesus and take His name in vain. They say that they do not believe He was God, only a teacher. All they are doing is trying to justify their sin. They evidently don't realize the severity of their actions. They think they can become the judge of God's Word, which makes them greater than God Himself. None is greater than God, and no one can stand in judgment of His Word. The only thing we can do as lowly human beings, is to submit to the Word of God and obey it faithfully. Anything less than that is sin.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Jeremiah 37-39 and Hebrews 3.
