Don't Forget the Works of God - Psalms 105-106 and I Corinthians 3
There are several problems that arise when we allow ourselves to forget all the marvelous things God has done and is doing in our lives and in our world. The first things is that we fail to be thankful. The psalmist points this out very well in Psalm 105. God wants us to live with a thankful attitude all of the time. The only way that will happen is for us to focus on the things God has done, instead of focusing on the troubles we have. When we focus on our troubles, we forget what God can do. When we remember what He has done, we can see that He is able to work it out now, and we are able to give Him thanks, even in trials. In Psalm 106 the psalmist reminds us that remembering the works of God leads us to repentance. When we think about how God has judged those who have sinned, it leads us to think soberly about our own sin and repent. That is a very powerful result of not forgetting the works of God. Consider what God did to Sodom and Gomorrah. That should cause us all to be ready to repent of sin quickly and completely.
Another consequence of thinking about God's works is that we will have the proper perspective on the present state of affairs. The Christians in Corinth were acting in a carnal way. They were not considering the things of God. They were forgetting that God works through the Spirit and not the flesh. They were looking at men like Paul and Apollos, instead of looking at what God had done and was doing through everyone. In other words, forgetting the works of God had caused them to miss the big picture and to focus in on the wrong things. We all need to look back at our lives and see how God has built us up. It has not been by our own power. It has not come by human power, but by the Lord. When we forget that, we lose the proper perspective in life. Let's all set aside some time today and every day to consider the works of God in our lives and in the world. Then, let's be thankful, repentant, and reflective, so we can be right with God.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 107-109 and I Corinthians 4.
