July 28 - Isaiah 38-40
Have you ever noticed that we must remain very close to the Lord or our lives will be full of contradictions? One day we will be a faithful disciple and the next day Jesus will be saying "Get behind me, Satan." That is what happened to Hezekiah. In chapter 38 God hears his sincere prayer for healing and fifteen years are added to his life. This came as a result of his faithfulness and his heartfelt request. Then, in chapter 39 Hezekiah shows the representatives from Babylon all of the treasures of his kingdom and God's house. He must have done this out of pride. Therefore, God was very angry with him. What a quick turn around. We must all live one day at a time, and we must look to the Lord each day for His wisdom and direction, or we will be tossed by the waves of life and often fail to follow the Lord's will.
Isaiah 40 is a very important passage because it speaks of God's comfort to His people. There are references to John, the Baptist, and to Jesus. Of course, The coming of Jesus was the greatest blessing for the human race, because He dealt with sin once and for all, so we could be forgiven by grace through faith. This is the most complete comfort. Then, there is the Word of God with all of it's promises and commands. It brings us comfort for each day we live. Finally, there is the fact of verse 31. Those who "wait" on the Lord will never lose their strength. They will be strong in the Lord. The Lord will come to comfort those who wait on Him. The word comfort means "with strength." When we wait on the Lord, He will come to us with the strength we need for that day and hour. Therefore, we must constantly look to the Lord and wait for Him to direct us and to provide His power for our lives.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Isaiah 41-43.
