Misplaced Security
I take some time in the mornings after my Unhurried time to read the news on the Internet. I try to stay up on what is going on and what people on all sides are saying about it. As I look through the articles, I see stories about how much money we need to make to live a comfortable life and how much we need to have, so we will have enough for retirement. In both of these cases it is wrong for any of us to feel secure in life or retirement because of the amount of money we make or what we have in the bank. Our security should come from our relationship with God and His watchcare over us, not money.
As we have seen, Job was a righteous man. He had lived a virtuous life up to the time he was allowed to be struck by Satan for a time of trial. He had a lot of money, too, because God had blessed him. However, his security did not come from his wealth. (Job 31:24) Job asked his friends and God this question. "Have I put my trust in money or felt secure because of my gold?" Of course, the answer was no. We need to learn this lesson today, as well, for the sake of our relationship with God.
We live in a very unstable world. The United States could be attacked by one or more of our enemies at any time. We might not feel vulnerable, but we are. Remember September 11, 2001. If that were to happen, what would you do? Who would you trust? The economy of our country could come crashing down because of our debt and the deficit spending every year. The Stock Market could completely fall apart, and our savings could be diminished. Who would you trust then? Of course, God is the only One we can count on to sustain us, no matter what happens in the world.
Therefore, we need to quit putting our trust in money. We need to quit thinking so much about making more money and how to invest it, even though it is OK to think about those things. Our priority needs to be our relationship with Jesus. We need to be so secure in that relationship that we know He has forgiven our sins by grace through faith in Him, and He has prepared a place for us in heaven with Him. We need to have that security so that whatever happens tomorrow, we look to Him to be our Rock and our Provider. He will never let us down.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Job 34-38.
