The Importance of Commitments

I am afraid that we live in a time when people do not keep their commitments verry well. I am not being judgmental. I am just making an observation from my experiences with others. It is a bad sign for our culture, and it shows a lack of character in us when we do not do what we say we will do. That is one of the basic necessities for having a functioning society. People have to be able to count and us, and we must be able to count on other people. If not, things go downhill fast.

The Lord makes this point in His Word in a lot of ways. (Numbers 30:2) God told Moses to tell the people that a man who makes a vow to the Lord or makes a pledge under oath must never break it. He must do exactly what he said he would do. That is very clear, isn't it? What we need to do is to be honest with ourselves and with the Lord and take an inventory of our lives in this vital area.

Just think of how this affects so many people. If a couple promises each other and God that they are going to be committed to each other and be faithful in marriage, but one or both of them don't keep their vows, the marriage dissolves. They are hurt emotionally and financially. Then, if they had children, it affects their children in many different ways that are not good. We see this happening in so many cases, and it is hurting our society. It is a bad example for others, as well.

When it comes to our commitments to the Lord, we must keep them. We can't say that we are trusting Jesus as our Lord and Savior one day, and then go back on that vow the next day. If we break our commitment, we are not really exercising faith in Jesus, and we are not really saved. If we make a vow to pray and read our Bible every day, but we fail to keep that vow, God sees that He can't depend on us to do what we said, so He probably won't give us other assignments to do. We will miss out on His blessings. It all goes back to our heart and our character to keep our commitments.
