Looking at the Things Not Seen
There are some people who have very good imaginations. They can use their minds to think of things that are not real. I think that is where a lot of science fiction stories and movies originate. I am not that way. I am a very concrete person. I look at the things that are real, and I deal with those things the best I can with God's help. However, there is a very real world around us that we cannot see with our eyes. We don't see it with our imagination, either. We can only see it with the eyes of our heart.
The Bible encourages us to look at those things, and it does that for a very good reason. (II Corinthians 4:18) We do not look at the things that are seen, but at the things which are not seen, because the things that are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal. This gives us something very important to consider today. I believe this could help many of us see things in life in the right way.
If we are looking at the things that are seen all of the time, we could miss out on the most important things in life. Some of us are always trying to make more money, go more places, and acquire more possessions. We think that these things will complete our lives. We think that money will buy happiness. We think that seeing places in this world will satisfy us. We think the possessions will make our lives better. However, none of those things are true.
Life is not meant to be lived for the temporary things, but for eternal things. The things we see will be burned up one day. They will not last, and even if they last until we die, we will leave them all behind at that point. Life is meant to be lived for the eternal things, which are the things we can't see yet, but we know they are coming. God has promised them in His Word. Those things are eternal. We need to be looking at those things with the eyes of our heart as we read God's Word, and we need to be preparing for that time by laying up treasures in heaven. We won't do that if we are always looking at the things that are seen.
