The Fruit of Our Labor
Work is a very good thing. It was one of the first things God established in the Garden of Eden when He gave Adam the responsibility to tend the garden. God knew how He made us as human beings. He knew that work would be good for us. I believe that is why so many people are having trouble today. Most people think of work as a bad thing, and they try to do as little as possible. When they do that they miss all the benefits.
The psalmist knew all about this. (Psalm 128:2) He declared that when we eat the labor of our hands, we will be happy, and it will be well with us. He is pretty clear on the benefits of work, so we need to explore them so we understand, and we have the right attitude toward our work. A lady who stays home to support her husband and family with her work at home gets the same rewards.
The first thing we should notice in this verse is that we eat because of the labor of our hands. The Bible says that if we don't work, we shouldn't expect others to feed us. So if we work hard, we have more to eat and more resources for our family. That gives us a sense of accomplishment, which we all need. That contributes to our happiness as God blesses our efforts.
Also, when we work, and do our part to feed our families, things will be well with us. God makes sure of that. It is not that we won't have problems. It is a general principle that proves itself over time. I believe that is the reason things have gone well for America. We were founded on the principles of liberty, personal responsibility, and private ownership. We are benefiting from being a society where people work to provide for themselves and their families.
