Hedged behind and Before

We all want to feel safe as we go through our lives. It is very stressful to feel like we are in danger. That is why so many people install security systems on their property. There seem to be cameras everywhere watching for anyone who is up to no good. Also, that is why people build fences and put up hedges around their property. If we have thick hedges, we feel secure from outside intruders. God uses this comforting image to convey a great truth to us.

David was constantly in danger form his enemies and from evil people who wanted to do him harm. He was constantly praying for God to take care of him. (Psalm 139:5) Because of those prayers, David knew that God had hedged him behind and before. Also, God had put His hand upon him. What a picture of God's loving protection over His children!

God is watching our backs. No one is going to sneak up on us without Him knowing. He has put a hedge behind us to deter any attacks of any kind. Also, He has hedged us in front of us, so that He goes before us wherever we go. He prepares the way as we follow His will for our lives. To top it all off He places His hand on us to protect us and give us that feeling of security. When we realize this like David did, we can go into any direction and know we will be OK.

We also see this image in the book of Job where the devil complains to God that God had put a hedge of protection around Job and His family. The devil could not penetrate that hedge. God had to take is down for Satan to be able to touch Job. Even then, God did not desert Job. He was with him all the way. However, this gives us the assurance that Satan, his demons, and all evil doers cannot get to us when God has hedged us behind and before.
