The Alpha and the Omega
Most people do not realize the true identity of Jesus. Many people think that He was just a good teacher who lived a short time and died by crucifixion. Others believe that He was a prophet of God. Still others think that He wasn't even a real person, but a fictional character who was invented by others to start a religion. All of these views are grossly inadequate.
We need to hear from Jesus Himself. He told us who He is. (Revelation 1:8) "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty." There is so much in this statement that we need to know and understand in order to really know the true identity of Jesus.
Jesus is eternal. The alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet, and the omega is the last letter of the Greek alphabet. That shows us that He exists from the beginning of all things to the end of everything. He did not have a beginning, and He will not have an end to His life. That is why He told us that He is and was, and is to come. Jesus is the eternal Lord God, not just a teacher or just a prophet.
Jesus introduced Himself to John on the island of Patmos as "the Almighty." Jesus is the All-powerful God of the universe. There is no one who has His power, and no one could ever conquer Him. That is what makes Christmas so amazing. The Lord God, the Almighty, came down here to be born as a baby, so He could live a sinless life and die for our sins. He didn't have to do that for us, but He did it out of His great love for all of us. Let's remember this is what we celebrate at Christmas.
