His Commandment
When we get to know other people, we get to know what they like and what they don't like. In fact, we come to know what they will say even before they say it. We know what they will ask of us in certain situations. It all becomes clear because we know them so well. They may have some non-negotiables that they always require us to do. We might call those things their commandments.
This is definitely true of God. He is all about commands, since He is Lord of all. However, He does have one basic commandment for all of us, and it has two parts. (I John 3:23) His commandment is that we believe in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and love one another, just as He commanded us to love each other. God is very clear in this command.
We are commanded to believe in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. That means we are to put our faith in Him as Lord, the One who died for us and rose again to purchase our salvation. There is no other way to have our sins forgiven, and because of His love for us, He wants us to be saved form our sins. That is why He commands us to believe in Jesus.
Then, God knows the best way for us to live after we come to trust in Jesus. Since God is love, and He comes to live in us at salvation, His commandment is for us to love one another as He loves us. That is what He commanded, since His unselfish, unconditional love is the best possible love. It makes all of our relationships better when we obey this part of His commandment, I pray all of us will live by both parts of His Commandment.
