Young and Wise or Old and Foolish

There is decision for us to make as a culture today. Who are we going to follow? Of course, we should all follow the Lord. However, we need to have human leaders, too. When it comes to which human leaders are the best, how do we know? Solomon gave us a nugget of wisdom about this choice. (Ecclesiastes 4:13) It is the opposite of conventional wisdom, but it is truth. We need to hear what God is saying through Solomon and take it to heart, as we choose our leaders.

Many times we find that older people are more experienced and have more wisdom than younger people. That is not always the case, though. There are times when older people have just gone through life taking advantage of the opportunities they have had and arriving at a place of importance. This doesn't mean they have become wise or know what they are doing. It is possible to be an old fool, who doesn't know which end is up. We sure don't need leaders who are like this. On the other hand, we think that younger people do not have wisdom, so we discount their ability. That is a mistake, too. Sometimes, younger people have some wisdom, as they have listened to God and followed His way.  In that case, a young, poor person who has some wisdom is much better that an old foolish person. I hope we will all take this principle into account as we prayerfully seek which human leaders to follow, or we will end up in a very bad situation as a society.
