Dealing Responsibly with Reality

Life is about decisions. In order to make the right decisions, we have to see reality well. Reality is how things really are, not just the way we perceive them to be. The problem in life is that many people only go by their impression of reality, and they make their decisions based on partial reality. That leads to faulty thinking and wrong decisions. Solomon told us that it is best to stay in touch with both sides of an issue. In fact, a person who fears God deals responsibly with all of reality, not just a piece of it. (Ecclesiastes 7:18) That is a very valuable insight into the right way to live our lives.

Often, we see just one side of an issue, because of the way we were raised, or because we are only investigating a piece of reality, not all of it. We can be very hard headed about what we believe and not be open to hearing what others believe or to hear the facts that go against what we believe. It is impossible to make a correct decision based on only a piece of reality. God's truth is so perfect that when we investigate all of reality, we will come to His way, if we judge all of reality by His Word. Take both sides of any issue and apply the principles and commands of Scripture. Then, what is left that we haven't refuted is reality. God's truth can never be refuted by any of the facts from either side of an issue, so we never need to be afraid of being open to both sides and fully investigating everything. In fact, that is the only way to be assured that we believe God's truth, and we are prepared to make the right decision on anything in life.
