Looking Back is Good

History is history. We can't change it, but we should know it and learn from it. We hear a lot about bad things that happened in history these days. People want to put away those memories, but is that really a good thing, even though they are painful memories? I don't think so. If we do not know history, we are destined to repeat it, because human nature will gravitate to the same things again. The best thing is to look back on the good and the bad, so we can stay away from the sinful things and embrace noble things. In fact, I believe we should look back at the works of God to remember all He has done for this world and to follow His ways even more. That is what Asaph, the psalmist, said was a practice of his. (Psalm 77:11,12)  He would take time to lay out on the table the ancient wonders God has done. He would ponder all that God has accomplished and give a long, loving look at God's gracious actions. I believe that would benefit all of us today and all of the time.

Our world is not a lost cause. Think of how the Lord can delivered His people from sin and destruction. Noah and his family were miraculously saved by building an ark through God's power. God won't ever flood the earth again, but He is still just as powerful to save us. Think of how God protected Israel from their enemies time and again. That was not hard for God. All the people had to do was to trust Him. Think of the Exodus from Egypt and the walls of Jericho falling at their shout. God has done it over and over again. When Peter was in prison for his preaching, the angel led him out without a sound. Paul and all of his companions were saved from a ferocious storm by the power of God. Just take time to lovingly recount the powerful works of God, praising Him that He is still able. Don't despair. Don't give up. Look to the Lord and ask Him to do it again, just like He has done so many times in the past.
