A Stubborn Cow or a Lamb

We all know Psalm 23 where David proclaimed, "The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want." David was a man after God's own heart. Most of the time he was listening to the Lord and obedient to whatever He said to Him. However, Israel was just the opposite in Hosea's time. Israel was an obstinate cow. Therefore, the Lord could not shepherd them the way He would shepherd a lamb, like David. (Hosea 4:16) This is a great lesson for all of us, as believers.

I have seen a few stubborn cows in my life. They have to be in a fence, at least. Other times, they have to be tied up with a strong rope to keep them out of trouble. Then, at other times it may even take putting a ring in that cow's tender nose in order to be able to lead the cow in the right way. When we are like stubborn cows spiritually, God has to take measures to corral us and even to use pain to get us to follow His instructions. Since He is the Good Shepherd, He does whatever it takes. However, when we are like a lamb, we can be in an open field. When we hear His voice, we follow Him to the still waters or to a green field for a feast. We are quick to obey the Lord when He calls on us to restore our soul, like David said. So the question is whether we are going to be like a stubborn cow or a lamb. Our choice determines how God has to shepherd us. I pray we all will make it easy on ourselves and be His little lambs in an open field.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Hosea 6-8.
