Worshiping the Lord with All Kinds of Instruments

King David was a master musician. When he brought the Ark of the Covenant up to Jerusalem, all Israel played music before the Lord on all kinds of instruments in a glorious time of worshiping God. (II Samuel 6:5) There is a truth here for all of us to learn.

We can worship God in many ways and with many kinds of music. Our worship should not be limited to one way or to one type of music. God is so glorious, and He has given us the ability to express our worship to Him in all kinds of ways, so we should learn to worship Him in many ways. This expands our understanding of worship, and it keeps worship fresh and alive, instead of stale and redundant.

It is easy for us to get used to using certain instruments in worship and even to think that there are only certain instruments that should be used in our times of worship. A study of Bible passages like this one and many more in the Bible will reveal that we should not feel that way about the instruments of worship. The Bible speaks of using instruments of fir wood, which would make a sounds like drums when beaten. Then, there are stringed instruments like guitars, as well as harps. Also, we find tambourines and sistrums which are percussion instruments, too. If we can imagine the sound of all of these instruments, plus cymbals, trumpets, and others being played before the Lord, we will realize it was a vibrant and joyful sound of praise. After all, that is very fitting, because our praise of the One True and Living God should abound with life and joy for all He has done for us.

Tomorrow, I intend to read II Samuel 7-9.
