The Lord May Look on My Affliction
David found himself in a very discouraging situation, when his son, Absalom, rebelled against him and set himself up as king. David had to flee Jerusalem, while Absalom came to claim the throne. As David left the city a man named Shimei stood at a distance cursing King David. Some of David's men wanted to kill him for this, but David stopped them. David's response showed how much he trusted God to be fair and do the right thing. (II Samuel 16:12) Let's think about what he said.
David knew that God might be sensitive to David's affliction and repay him with good for this cursing. The determining factor was David's heart. God always looks on the heart. He knows that we fail, but when He sees that our heart is pure, He does not allow evil to overtake us, but He repays us with good, even if people are cursing us, and things are not going well. That is how fair and just God is to us. Therefore, we should not attack people who attack us and insult us. We should trust God to bring justice, and reward us with good, if we deserve it. If we don't deserve it, we can still trust Him to do the right thing.
Tomorrow, I intend to read II Samuel 18-20.
