A Marriage Blessing
The union of a man and a woman in marriage is a gift from God, but that does not mean that everything goes well automatically. There are a lot of factors that can make the marriage better or worse. Many experts would agree that the first year is very important to the success of the marriage. God designed marriage, so He also gave a marriage blessing to His people, that a new husband was to stay at home the first year and bring happiness to his wife.(Deuteronomy 24:5) We need to learn from this Old Testament command for marriage.
My wife, Chris, had a godly grandmother, Halley Bennett. She prayed for Chris to come to know Christ and gave her one of her first Bibles. When we got married, she blessed us in a way that was close to this command. She gave us a small inheritance on the condition that Chris would not work for the first year of our marriage. It was not a lot of money, but we took it and promised Grandma Halley that we would fulfill her request. I was going to Baylor and a part time music and youth director at a church. This marriage blessing gave us much more time together and much less stress than we would have had if Chris had been working for that first year. God was able to bond our hearts together in a wonderful love relationship that has only grown over the years. It still was not easy, but it was much easier than it would have been.
Thank God for His commands and the insights they give us. Thank God for godly grandmothers who know God's commands. Thank God for the blessing of marriage that is done His way.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Deuteronomy 26-28.
