The Selfishness of Religion
People participate in a religion for what they can get out of it. They want blessings, prosperity, or eternal life. That is not Christianity. Christianity is a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, because He is the Lord, and we are to worship and serve Him in faith. Salvation is a by-product of the relationship. Christianity is not selfish, but selfless. We are to be like Jesus who gave Himself for us in service and death. Unfortunately, many people only have religion, and they are doing it for selfish reasons.(Jeremiah 44:16,17)
Consider the contradiction here. Jesus is Lord. He loved us and cared for us so much that He was willing to come down to earth, live a sinless life of suffering and death to teach us and to pay for our sins. He did not do it for Himself, but for us. Then, we come to hear that if we surrender to Him as Lord and put our trust in Him and not ourselves, He will forgive our sins, adopt us into His family, and give us eternal life. However, the main thing is trusting Him, as Lord. Now, if a person practices a religion thinks that is all he or she needs to do to get to heaven and receive His blessings, is that consistent with Jesus Christ? I don't think so. That is the same type of religion the people in Jeremiah's day and in all of human history have practiced, just for their own well being. Think about it.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Jeremiah 45-48.
