Trust and Obey

This evening we sang that old hymn, Trust and Obey, in our worship time, since I was teaching from Galatians 3:1-9. I tried to show our folks that we often fail to really understand and apply the Biblical truth in that song. We are not to get saved from our sins by grace through faith, and then, live by works. That is Paul's message to us in Galatians 3. However, many Christians try to do just that.

What does it mean to trust? It means to listen to what someone says and then, to do it based on our belief in that person. If a doctor tells us to take medicine, we will take it if we trust the doctor. So do we trust God? How many things does He say in His Word that we should do as believers? There are a lot of commands and a lot of promises. If we trust Him, we will do them. You might say, "I just can't do them." Yes, you can, because if you trust Him and set out to do it, He will give you the ability to do it by His Spirit. He only gives you the grace to do what He directs you to do, though, so that is where the trust comes in.

Some people want to do their own will in their own way, and then, they want God to bless them. That is not trusting and obeying. That is living by works. God won't provide His power for us when we do it that way. Therefore, we might be believers, but we will not experience the power of His Spirit, because are failing to live by faith, trusting Him. So start walking with Him each day in prayer and in His Word. Whatever He shows you to do, do it, trusting Him to give you the power. That is living by faith. That is where we receive the blessings of God.

Tomorrow, I intend to read II Kings 17-19.
