When We do Not Know What To Pray For

As I have told you before, I love to pray Scripture and Scriptural prayers for people, because then, I know what I am praying is God's will. However, there are times that there is not a specific Scripture that tells me how to pray in a particular situation. The Bible gives us the solution to this problem in Romans 8:26, "Likewise, the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit, Himself, makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered."

Doesn't that make it clear? The Spirit knows our heart's desire, and He knows the will of God perfectly. Therefore, He can go to the Father for us and intercede for us in a way that expresses our desires and still is in line with God's will. He actually does it with "unutterable groanings," because He loves us so much, and He cares for the situation for which we are praying. This is what the Bible calls "praying in the Spirit" as compared to "praying with understanding." When we do not understand how to pray. the Spirit does it for us.

This is one reason we need to sit before the Lord in prayer. We should not be in a hurry. We should converse with Him and share our hearts about all kinds of things and many different people. As we pray, we think of God's character and His Word, so we can pray with understanding. Also we listen to what He is saying to us, so we can obey His will. Then, we pour out our hearts when we just don't know what to say, so the Spirit can intercede for us.

Tomorrow, I intend to read I Samuel 22-24.

Ask God to use Phil Covone to deliver His Word to our church family and others who come to the services, so we can know God’s will and turn to the Lord.
