Being A Servant

If Christians are people who are like Jesus, then, Christians will be servants. (Philippians 2:5-11) However, there are several things that keep us from being servants as we should.

If we are ruled by selfishness, we will not be servants. We will have to seek the well-being of others before we seek our own needs and interests. The wonderful part of this is that when we meet the needs of others, it is so much more fulfilling than trying to cater to ourselves. Selfishness cuts us off from our relationships with others, and it brings pain, not happiness.

Pride will keep us from being servants, too. If we think too highly of ourselves, we will not stoop to helping others. We will look at them as inferior to ourselves. We might pity them, but we won't serve them. We might help them to be recognized by others, but we won't actually serve them.

Finally, we won't be servants, if we don't love others with a sincere love. Love is of God. Love cares. Love gives. Love knows when to reach out to those around us. We must live in love to be real servants.

Therefore, if we want to be servants, we need to pray that the Holy Spirit will remove the selfishness and pride from our lives and fill us with His love. Then, we can begin to be servants like Jesus.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Matthew 24-26.
