Marital Love

There is nothing quite like the love between a husband and a wife who are fully committed to each other and love each other with all their hearts. It is so special that the Lord used it as a picture of our love relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ. When God brings two people together in holy matrimony, and they are joined by God to become "one flesh," something amazing happens. There is a unity and a bond that is greater than any other earthly relationship. Those of us who have been married or who are married now know what I am talking about.

The Song of Solomon is a love song from Solomon to his wife and from his wife to him. Even though Solomon sinned by having many wives, it seems that he had a very close relationship with this wife, and they were enthralled with each other. (Song of Solomon 4:10) "Your love delights me, my treasure, my bride. Your love is better than wine, your perfume more fragrant than spices." There are several things in this verse that can help all of us whether we are married or not.

When we love the Lord or another person, we delight in them. When they love us back, their love delights  us. This is the spark God desires in our relationships. We don't just like someone, we love them. We delight in being with them and talking with them. We delight in doing anything we can for them, and that feeling is mutual if it is a husband and wife. Our spouse becomes our treasure. Like Jesus said our treasure will be where our heart is. Our heart will be on them continually, much like it is on the Lord continually. That is what makes it so hard when we lose our spouse. 

When we are married, our love is better than wine or any special food we could ever eat. It brings us so much satisfaction that we don't need the other things in life that bring us pleasure. Just to be with them is a joy; much more than being drunk with wine, we are inebriated with their love. When we are around them, their perfume is extra sweet, even if they don't have any perfume on, we can sense their personal presence, and it is so pleasing to us. What a blessing God has given us in the gift of love, and especially the gift of marital love.
