Loving Money

 We throw the word love around a lot. We say we love doughnuts and pizza. We say we love a particular TV show or movie. We even say that we love singers and movie stars that we have never met. What do we really mean when we use the word love in those ways? I believe we are saying that we like them a lot, but to me that is not what the word love means. We don't love a person just because we like them a lot. Love is much more than that.

Love is a choice. Love is a commitment. We can love things, but should we? We can decide to love people we don't know, but is that really a good thing to do? We can even love money, but what does that get us. The Bible tells us. (Ecclesiastes 5:10) "Those who love money will never have enough. How meaningless to think that wealth brings true happiness." There is a lot of wisdom in that short verse. Let's consider what God is saying to us.

If we are committed to money so that we choose to put money first in our lives, then we will never have enough. We will want more and more money and the things that money can buy. We will spend our time and energy making money or pursuing money in various ways because we have decided it is what we want more than anything else. Just think about it like being married to money. It takes over our lives. Then, no matter how much money we have, it can never bring the results we are looking for.

Yes, it is meaningless to think that wealth can bring true happiness. True happiness is really the joy that can only come from a relationship with Jesus and the filling of the Holy Spirit. It is an inward quality of being satisfied with our lives because we have our sins forgiven, and we know we are secure in our eternal destiny in heaven with the Lord. No amount of money can buy salvation. Money is worthless when it comes to eternal things. That is why we all need to love the Lord and not money.
