From Early Morning until Late at Night
Do you have a regular routine that you follow every weekday and maybe another routine for the weekends? I believe having a good regular routine is one of the best things we can do to keep us close to God and living our Christian life well. After all, there are things that the Lord tells us are essential for knowing and doing His will. We will need a routine for reading God's Word because it is our spiritual food. Also, we need a definite routine for praying.
The psalmist gave us a great insight into his routine. (Psalm 119:147,148) He said that he would rise early in the morning before the sun was up, and he would cry out to God for help. Also, he would put his hope in the words of God. Then, he would stay awake at different times of the night thinking about God's promise. That gives me a picture of a person who was depending on God in prayer. We all need to do just that.
I know we all don't get up before the sun rises, but I firmly believe that whenever we start our day, we should make it our routine to cry out to God for help. Jesus told us that without Him we can do nothing, so why would we try to navigate any day without His help? (John 15:5) We need to start out the day with a cry, not just a simple perfunctory prayer. Then, we need to pray the words of God and read the words of God, basing our hope in His words. That way we know everything will be alright because of what God's Word tells us.
Then, at night we need a good night's sleep. Most people try to get around 8 hours of sleep to be healthy. However, as we are falling asleep and as we wake during the night, we should make sure our mind is set on the Lord. We can pray more, and we can rest soundly in His promises to us. When we know the Lord, He is our Strength and Shield. He is our Rock and our Comforter. As we think on these things, we will have a good, restful sleep, and we will be ready for our routine to start over in the morning.
