Desiring an Eagerness for God's Laws

Motivation is very important in life. We need to have the right motivation if we are going to be responsible and accomplish what we need to do in our lives. A lot of people today seem to be lacking the right motivation. It seems they only want to have money for the things they want, so they work enough to get that money. Beyond that, they are not motivated to do anything to improve their lives. That is not God's will for any of us.

The psalmist gave us the right directions. (Psalm 119:36,37) He asked God to give him an eagerness for God's laws rather than a love for money. He also asked God to turn his eyes form worthless things, and to give him life through His Word. That is a very wise prayer, and it is a good prayer for all of us, if we wish to have the right motivation to live a righteous life and be blessed by God. Let's think about what this verse says.

Many people think that the laws of God are a burden, and they have no eagerness to learn them, much less practice them. This leads them to have the wrong values in their lives. Their eyes are on making as much money as they can, and then spending that money on things they desire because they think those things will make them happy. Remember, the Bible says that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. If we love money and material things, we will miss what is really important.

The eternal things are the only things that really have worth. The things of this world are worthless once we leave this world, and many of them are worthless for our lives now. We all need to have real life through God's Word. We need to desire it and practice it. Then, we will have the abundant life, not just an existence of laboring for things that don't last. Our lives will be so much more enriched by God's Word than by anything we could ever buy with money. Let's decide to let God's Word be our motivation, not money and material things.
