Our Very Present Help
There are so many different things going on in our world today. It can be scary just to listen to the news and hear about the new types of weapons that are being developed by our enemies. Then, we hear about a cyber attack that could shut down all of the Internet and communications. There was even a story about two people trying to smuggle in a biochemical agent that would kill the crops, so our food supply would be destroyed. However, there is a very safe place where we can be protected from all of these things and more.
The psalmist had a confident trust in the Lord in his day. (Psalm 46:1,2) He declared to all of us, as believers, that God is our refuge. He is a very present help in trouble, so that we do not need to fear, even though the earth would be removed and though the mountains are carried into the sea. What a fabulous truth for all of us. There is no need to fear if God is on our side. He can handle whatever may come. Let's take this apart.
When we have a disaster in our lives, God is our refuge, our safe place. We can run to Him because He cares for us. He is our strength. We are weak, but He is stronger than any foe or disaster. He is very near all of the time. He is our very present help in our trouble. If we trust Him, we will run to Him and allow Him to protect us. Nothing could be more reassuring than this statement of truth.
This is true even if the earth be removed. Yes, if somehow a nuclear weapon or something more powerful would destroy the very earth upon which we live, God is there to deliver us from that calamity. Even if there is an earthquake so powerful that the mountains crumbled into the sea, God is there for us. He can protect us here, or take us to heaven. Either way, we have nothing to fear. What a wonderful God we serve!
