Feed My Sheep
We have talked about being Jesus's sheep many times in this blog. There is a lot of truth in that analogy. One part which we have not talked about lately is food for the sheep. Of course, sheep need food to live, good food with plenty of nourishment. The shepherd has to lead them to the right pastures, so they do have the right food. We, as Christians, need our spiritual food in the same way. We need good quality food and plenty of it, so we can grow strong in the Lord. That is why God calls people out to feed His sheep. That is what Jesus said to Peter by the Sea of Galilee after His resurrection. (John 21:17) Jesus asked Peter 3 times if he loved Him, and 3 times Peter responded that he did love Jesus. It grieved Peter that Jesus asked 3 times, because it reminded him of his 3 denials the night before Jesus was crucified. However, Peter replied that Jesus knew everything. He knew Peter loved Him even though he had denied Him. Then, Jesus told Peter, "Feed My Sheep." This showed him and us that Jesus had a special job for him even though Peter was not perfect by any stretch. He is saying the same thing to us today.
We can feed ourselves the spiritual food we need to grow in the Lord. We can read the Bible and allow the Spirit to illuminate the meaning to us. He is our Helper to lead us into all truth and to remind us of what we have already learned. However, we also get fed spiritual food by other people. When we love the Lord, and we are surrendered to do His will, we are to feed Jesus's sheep. Yes, even regular Christians. We do not have to be special to teach others God's truths. A father teaches his children, and a mother does the same. We go to small groups for Bible study. We have a teacher who feeds us, but we also feed each other there. Then, we go to worship with our church family. We are fed by the messages. All of this needs to be taken very seriously, because we need to be fed well and often to be the strong Christian we need to be every day. Then, of course, we can be fed by pod casts and messages that comes through all types of media. Then, we can pass on what we have learned to feed other sheep. See what I mean. All Christians are qualified and expected to feed the other sheep, so we all become like Jesus.
