Abandoned
Have you ever been abandoned or felt abandoned by a friend or a family member? I am sure we have all felt that way at one time or another in our lives. It is one of the worst feelings we can have. It is so important for us to have those close relationships with trusted friends and our family members. When we are abandoned, it causes us to wonder why and even to question ourselves. I have good news, though. Jesus knows just how it feels, because He was abandoned by His Father while He was on the cross. (Matthew 27:46) I believe that is one of the main reasons He told us He would never leave us or forsake us.
Jesus had lived for eternity past in perfect fellowship with the Father and the Spirit. He had never known a time when He could not talk with His Father and know His approval and support. However, when Jesus went to the cross, His mission was to pay for the sins of mankind. To do that, God the Father had to dump all of our sins on Him, so that He became sin for us. He took the punishment for our sins, and He died in our place. During that three hour period, Jesus was abandoned by His Father, since sin separates us from God. This time of being abandoned hurt Jesus so much He had to cry out to the Father in anguish, asking Him why. Even though Jesus really knew why, He was in such spiritual pain, He had to reach out to His Father. Therefore, Jesus understands being abandoned, and we can go to Him when we feel abandoned. He can and will comfort us, since He knows by experience how much pain we are in.
