God's Promise to Abram
One of the most amazing promises in the Bible was given to Abram, who later became Abraham. The full promise is recorded in Genesis 12:1-3 for us to read and consider. Today, I want to focus in on two aspects of the original promise that are repeated to Abram once Lot separated from him. (Genesis 13:15,16) We should all marvel at what God promised Abram and look forward to seeing how He fulfilled His promise, as we continue to read Genesis.
God gave the land of Canaan to Abram and his offspring forever. Let that sink in for a minute. When we buy land, we can own it until we die. Then, it can be passed on to our offspring, but that is just for a small parcel of land or a farm. How many countries of the world have been owned by the same family since the country was established. I would say there are very few, if any, that fall into this category. However, the land of Israel was given to Abram forever. Yes, there are those who dispute this and fight over the land, but this is God's promise. Who do you think is going to prevail?
Also, God promised Abram that He would make the his offspring like the dust of the earth. That is a huge amount of offspring coming from one man. The thing that makes this part of the promise that much more amazing is that Abram's wife, Sarai, who later became Sarah, was barren. They had no children, and they had no prospects for having children. Even though that was the case Abram trusted the Lord and believed the promise. He was not perfect, but he had faith. That can be true of all of us. I pray that it is. Let's be like Abram and take God at His Word.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Genesis 14-17.
