The Greatest Among You
This world has a much different view of greatness than God does. The world counts people who are rich, powerful, and have a lot of authority as being great. It is not that way with God. God's measure is service. It is the opposite of what this world thinks. In this world servants are low, and slaves are lower. In God's kingdom servants are great and the slaves are even greater. (Matthew 20:25-27) This ought to cause us to pattern our lives toward service.
Jesus was a servant. In fact, He was slave of all, because He came to serve us by dying on the cross for all people. He gave the greatest service possible to provide the greatest gift, eternal life. Now, He is looking for us to be like Him. We need to consider how we are gifted and able to serve others, and we need to do it with all of our heart, soul, and strength. In fact, it would be good to see ourselves as slaves to those who need us, so that we never fail to supply what they need. Then, we will hear a "Well done" from Jesus one day. That will make it worth everything we had to endure to serve others.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Matthew 21-23.
