A Benefit of Being Afflicted
Most people hate to have afflictions. They do not see how any good can come from them. However, the opposite is true. When we have afflictions and troubles, it brings us to a point in our lives where we are ready to listen to the Lord and to others, as we seek a solution for what is afflicting us. The psalmist knew this, and he was glad that he had been afflicted.(Psalm 119:71) Let's see how his testimony could help us.
When we have any type of affliction, whether it is physical, mental, or spiritual, we can profit from it. The key to finding the benefit is listening to God while we are hurting. Of course, the Lord speaks to us mainly through His Word. That is what the psalmist understood, so he learned God's statutes while he was undergoing his problems. The statutes of God are His laws. They are the rules of the universe He created. God created the universe and set it in motion according to His laws and truths. We all need to know those things, so we can be right with Him and live righteously in this world. However, many times we do not want to apply ourselves to learn God's truths until we find ourselves in a place where we can't take care of ourselves, or we can't handle what is happening to us. Then, we are humble enough to admit, we need to learn. At that point, if we will turn to God and His Word, we can learn a lot in a short period of time, and what we learn will benefit us the rest of our lives.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 119:89 -121.
