Receiving and Believing
John 1 gives us a glorious description of Jesus being the Word, the Creator of all that was made, the Giver of life, and the Light. There is no doubt that Jesus is God, who took on human flesh, which is what it says in verse 14. However, the majority of the Jews and the other people who heard about Jesus rejected Him as being all of these things. It was only the ones who received Him and believed in His name that became the children of God.(John 1:12) The same is true today.
Receiving is the opposite of rejecting. When we receive Jesus, we are accepting God's revelation of Himself to us. We come to understand that Jesus is the Lord and Savior of the universe, Then, we go one more step. We trust Him as our Lord and Savior, because of who He is. That is what it means to believe in His name. The name of a person represents all that he or she is. Therefore, believing in the name of Jesus is trusting Him as God who became man, so that He could die for our sins and rise again to give us life and be our light for life.
I pray that if you have never received Him and believed in His name that you will do that today. Do not be like the majority who reject Jesus. Trust Him! He will not disappoint you or ever let you down. He is Lord of all.
Tomorrow, I intend to read John 2-4.
