Belonging to Jesus
Christianity is not a philosophy to be adopted. It is not a religion to be practiced. It is a relationship with Jesus. However, Jesus is Lord of all, so it is not a relationship of equals. When we submit to Him in faith, and He saves us by His grace, we are bought by His blood, so that we belong to Him.(I Corinthians 6:19,20) I know that sounds pretty amazing, but it is true. That fact has many consequences in our lives, as believers.
The Holy Spirit comes to live in us, and our bodies become the temple of the Holy Spirit. God resides in us. We belong to Jesus, because of the payment of His blood for our sins. The Spirit comes to guide us in what Jesus wants us to do. Since Jesus is Lord, we are supposed to do what He wants us to do, not what we want to do. Yes, we have a certain amount of freedom, but why would we want to live in any other way than His way? He died for us. He bought us back from sin and Satan. He loves us more than we love ourselves. We are foolish any time we fail to follow Jesus.
The goal of our lives is to glorify Jesus in our body and in our spirit. To glorify is to bring honor and respect to Him. It is to worship Him, so that He gets all of the credit for who we are and what we do. This is only logical since our body and our spirit belong to Him. That is why sin is totally inappropriate for Christians. We are taking His body and spirit and using it for something that dishonors Him. We should be able to see that our sin would displease Him, and it would tell Him that we are not really thankful for all He has done and is doing for us. When we sin, we glorify ourselves or someone else using His body and spirit.
The best life possible is when we stop fighting the one who owns us and allow the Spirit to fill our bodies and our spirits. Then, we have the power to glorify Jesus is all we do, and we do not incur His anger for rebelling against the one who loved us enough to die for us.
Tomorrow, I intend to read I Corinthians 9-11.
