Serving and Giving of Ourselves
These chapters in Matthew contain some of the basic truths that should govern our lives every day. The Christian life is not complicated, if we remember these things. First of all, our purpose in life must be to serve others and to give ourselves for them, as Christ served and gave of Himself for us.(Matthew 20:27,28) We do this because we love the Lord with all of our heart, soul, and mind, as well as loving others as we love ourselves.(Matthew 22:37-39) Just think how simple that makes many of the decisions of life.
We do not think of ourselves first. We put others first, and we do what we can to serve them and to give of ourselves to meet their needs. This eliminates selfishness and greed. We love the Lord supremely, much more than we love any human being. However, we love others like we love ourselves. That means we care about their needs like we care for ourselves, and we seek to meet those needs before we meet our own needs. Love is putting others first, whether it is the Lord or other people. That eliminates hatred, envy, and resentment.
What if everyone in the world lived by those basic principles? I know that is not very realistic. Not everyone is a believers and a follower of Christ. What if we lived by those principles every day? It would make a huge difference in our lives and in our sphere of influence. Let's try it with the help of the Lord Jesus, as our Model, and the Holy Spirit as our Strength and Guide.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Matthew 24-26.
