Presumptuous Sins
Most of us, as believers, do fairly well about staying away from the sins of commission with very serious consequences like murder, adultery, and extortion. When a believer falls into sins like those, it is because the presumptuous sins have had dominion over him, and next came the great transgression. That is why David asked God to keep him back from the presumptuous sins.(Psalm 19:13) Let's consider the nature and consequences of presumptuous sins, so we do not allow them to reign in our lives.
Any time we presume that a sin is not very serious or that God would surely forgive us for such a sin, it is a presumptuous sin. When we fail to read God's Word and pray on a daily basis in a meaningful way, we are committing this type of sin. We tell ourselves that it won't really matter in the big scheme of things, or we tell ourselves that God will understand that we are too busy to spend time with Him and His Word. These presumptuous sins keep us from being blameless before the Lord, and they lead to greater sins.
When we use foul language, we read dirty books, tell dirty jokes, and we have a hypocritical heart, we are falling into presumptuous sins. We think God and others will understand, because "everyone does it." No God does not understand. He knows that those sins bring destruction, because all sin is disobedience to God. All sin is sin. Sin grows if we do not root it out completely by God's power. That is why we have to eliminate presumptuous sins from our lives by God's power.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 21-23.
