Sin Has Consequences
Any time we sin we face the consequences, which God sends to deter us and others from continuing to sin. He does this out of His love, not out of anger. The consequences help us to take sin seriously. If there were no consequences to sin, we would pray for God to forgive us, and it would be over. However, that would lead us to sin more, because we would know we could sin with impunity. Moses and Aaron faced the consequences of their sin, when they did not obey God and hallow Him in front of the people.(Numbers 20:12) They were not allowed to lead the people into the Promised Land. It may seem like a harsh consequence, but God knows best.
Moses should have known better than to strike the rock to bring water. God spoke to him clearly, but he just did not obey. The reason does not matter. He did not believe or trust God. He took things into his own hands, which did not honor God, either. This was a serious sin, so God had to make sure the people knew that. Therefore, He determined to change leaders for the people to enter Canaan. God was still with Moses and Aaron. He did not hate them. They just had to learn their lesson.
I pray we have all learned this lesson, so that we will not seek to sin and think we can get away with no negative results. God makes sure that will not happen. He wants us to hate sin like He does and to determine to trust Him in everything. Then, we can escape the consequences of sin.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Numbers 22-24.
