The Penn State Tragedy
There has been a lot written the last few days about the things that have happened at Penn State University over the past few years. I think there is a lot for us to learn from this sad situation, and I do not intend to try to comment on all of those lessons. However, I do want to focus in on the real tragedy.
In Romans 1:18-32 the Lord shows the tragic spiral of sin. Once a person rejects the truth of God, they are subject to idolatry and perversions of the body and mind that God never intended when He created man. However, each of us has a choice. We can choose to follow God and His way, or we can go our own way. We will worship something. We will meet our needs in some way. We will rationalize our actions to make it seem that we are right. That downward spiral leads to the point that "knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same, but also approve of those who practice them."(Romans 1:32)
Penn State is not any worse than other university in America. We live in a country where sin is rampant, and we see its effects all around us. In this one case we see an assistant football coach who evidently preyed upon young men. We should be saddened because of the destructive power of sin in his life and what it did to these young men. We should pray for each of them, because the only power that can cleanse such hurt and corruption is the blood of Jesus Christ. He is the only one who can take our brokenness and make something beautiful.
I urge all of us to realize that Jesus can break the downward spiral of sin, if we will turn from our way and trust Him as the Lord of All, and the Lord of our lives. He can make us a new creation. (II Corinthians 5:17) Old things can be put away, and He can make all things new.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Acts 25-27.
