Public Reading of The Word
This evening we had a men's dinner in which men of all ages gathered to celebrate Memorial Day weekend and to read God's Word together. We had a steak dinner, and it was free for the veterans who came. It was a delicious dinner, and we had a great time of fellowship around the tables. It was great to see the fathers with their sons, and to hear the testimonies of the veterans.
The highlight of the evening was the reading of the Gospel of John. We read all 21 chapters aloud, mostly reading a chapter apiece out loud for the group. It reminded me of what Paul told Timothy in I Timothy 4:13, when he told him to give attention to reading. Most commentators take that to mean the public reading of God's Word. If you think about it, we don't really do that much any more. It is very edifying just to hear God's Word without commentary. God's Word can and will speak for itself.
It was touching to hear a son read half of a chapter and then, his dad finish. What a lesson to teach a son. It was wonderful to hear all of the different voices and even the various reading abilities, because God's Word is precious to everyone, not just the eloquent. We need the Word of God, and we should read it more in public, so that people are built up. Try it. I think you will like it.
Tomorrow, I intend to read I Chronicles 22-24 and John 8:28-59.
