God Cares for the Humble - II Samuel 1-2 and Luke 14:1-24
In many cultures there is an emphasis on being proud. God sees this as a serious sin. Therefore, God reaches out to the humble people to support them and to help them. This should be a great comfort to most of us, because we are of humble means and social standing. David had reasons to be proud. He was anointed the king of Israel. He had won many military victories. He had a large following, and the people had held him up as a great warrior. However, David acted in a humble way when Saul and his sons were killed. He did not assert his claim on the kingdom. He waited for the people to crown him. The tribe of Judah crowned him as king first, but he had to wait seven and a half years for the rest of the tribes to do the same thing. That is humility. In the meantime, the armies fought, but David did not promote himself. He waited for God's will.
In Luke 14 Jesus tells us about humility. He said for us to take the lowest seat, so we can be promoted by the head of the group. He pointed out that most people are proud and self-centered. When God calls them, they make excuses. We should not be that way. We should see that God loves the humble, the poor, and the needy. He wants His house to be full of them. Therefore, when God calls us we should humbly and gratefully follow Him. I pray that we all will break the bands of our culture and put on humility, so God can care for us as He desires.
Tomorrow, I intend to read II Samuel 3-5 and Luke 14:25-35.
