October 16 - Matthew 27,28
Oh, how great is the love of Jesus for us that He would give Himself to die for us! That is the one thought that always grips me when I read about His death. Of course, the resurrection followed three days later, but the pain and suffering were amazing. Just think, He did it all for you and me.
Even Judas was overcome with guilt, when he heard that Jesus had been tried and convicted. (27:3) Pilate was amazed at His silent composure in the face of death. The whole scene was at the same time out of control and very much under the direction of God. He knew the power of envy. (27:18) He knew that Pilate would have no other choice than to disregard the warning of his wife and her dream. (27:18) He knew the soldiers would be very efficient in their sourging and crucifixion of His Son. However, He knew the purpose for all of this. He knew it was worth the price to provide salvation for all who would come to Jesus in faith and repentance. The veil was torn to show that this was accomplished. (27:51) Finally, the mission was accomplished. The sacrifice was made. Jesus would await the resurrection and the announcement of His victory over sin, death, and Satan.
The women were there to see the angel. They saw the empty tomb, and they got the message without going in. They went to tell the others. They worshiped Jesus, the Risen One. No lie from the guards or the priests could dissuade them of the resurrection of their Lord. When the disciples saw Jesus on the mountain in Galilee, He told them to go, to tell, and to teach. We are still doing that today. What has been the result? Some worship Him and some doubt. (28:17) Some people can't bring themselves to believe that the God of the universe loves them that much. They can't believe miracles. They believe a lot of things that are even more strange, but they won't put their faith in Jesus. What about you? I pray that you can and will trust Christ before it is eternally too late.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Mark 1-3.
